Global Warming and Renewable Energy

What Is Global Warming?

The short answer: An urgent global problem with social, economic and environmental consequences, resulting from excessive reliance on fossil fuels like coal and oil. The science behind the short answer: “Global warming” is shorthand for a set of complex chemical and ecological processes resulting in the warming of the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. It occurs as a result of energy from the sun being trapped by gases in the atmosphere, primarily CO2 and methane. Normally, the natural presence of some heat-trapping gases in the Earth's atmosphere allows life to flourish by insulating us from the absolute cold of space. Carbon dioxide, methane, and other “greenhouse gases” are released and absorbed naturally in what is known as the carbon cycle, which plays a central role in the maintenance of life on the planet. Native Energy Renewable Energy Of course, this process has been going on for eons. Ice core data from Antarctica provides a pulse-like record of increases and decreases of gases and temperature over hundreds of thousands of years, influenced by the sun, Earth’s orbit, volcanism, and many other things. What is clear from this record is that the Earth’s temperature and atmospheric carbon are linked: when one is high, so is the other. StopGlobalWarming.org Since the Industrial Revolution – in about the last 150 years – humans have changed this natural pulse. We have done this primarily by digging up long-buried carbon in the form of coal, then oil and natural gas, and burning these “fossil fuels” – thus releasing this eons-old carbon into the atmosphere. Also, as our population has increased, methane from waste and agriculture has increased dramatically. The result is that we have increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to the point where we are warming the globe and causing our climate to change.

Barack Obama on Energy and the Enviroment

“Well, I don't believe that climate change is just an issue that's convenient to bring up during a campaign. I believe it's one of the greatest moral challenges of our generation. That's why I've fought successfully in the Senate to increase our investment in renewable fuels. That's why I reached across the aisle to come up with a plan to raise our fuel standards… And I didn't just give a speech about it in front of some environmental audience in California. I went to Detroit, I stood in front of a group of automakers, and I told them that when I am president, there will be no more excuses — we will help them retool their factories, but they will have to make cars that use less oil.”

— Barack Obama, Speech in Des Moines, IA, October 14, 2007

Obama’s comprehensive New Energy for America plan will:

  • Provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump
  • Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.
  • Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
  • Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars -- cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon -- on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.
  • Ensure 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
  • Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.

    We Can Solve It!

The We Campaign is a project of The Alliance for Climate Protection -- a nonprofit, nonpartisan effort founded by Nobel laureate and former Vice President Al Gore. Our ultimate aim is to halt global warming. Specifically we are educating people in the US and around the world that the climate crisis is both urgent and solvable.

    Why Join We

    • We recognize that climate change is real and has major implications for our planet, the economy and our quality of life
    • We believe there are solutions for addressing the crisis and we can transform our economy and add millions of new jobs by reorganizing ourselves to meet this challenge
    • We need leaders at all levels - business and government, national and local - to act boldly to adopt policies and practices to dramatically reduce greenhouse gases.
    • We understand that the time to act is now.
